Architecture Natural immersion

Hakone Retreat före & villa 1/f have been artfully crafted to draw one’s eye to the calming forest.

When Hakone’s clean-line, modern architecture is combined with the soft sunlight that pours through purposefully designed large windows, the property truly becomes one with the natural beauty of the surrounding forest, reminding guests of resorts in Northern Europe. Part of the hotel was originally designed as a house by renowned architect Tokichiro Fujita in 1915 and moved to Hakone in 1917.

Interior design East meets west

Eleven cottages are set in the forest, connected by a path, and feature large open-air hot spring baths facing a pond...

a grand piano, and a kitchen. Intentionally spare and modernly conceived, the rooms at Hakone Retreat före are inviting havens of deep hues, soft textures, and a welcoming wood-burning stove. Hakone Retreat villa 1/f presents stunning standalone cottages that are imbued with a sense of Japanese design tradition, yet artful Western lines, and natural wood that pays homage to the surroundings.
