Living Larch

At One With the Mountain

Resembling a fallen tree, the Vigilius Mountain Resort nestles quietly into a forested landscape of larch trees and provides a unique view of the surrounding Dolomites.

Vigilius Mountain Resort, in the mountainous, Germanic part of northern Italy known as South Tyrol, is not only a longtime Design Hotels™ member, but its understated building—set some 1,500 meters above a valley—was created by design star Matteo Thun with sustainability as one of its primary objectives. A green roof, a biomass power plant using waste wood from the surrounding forest, temperature-regulating clay walls for the rooms and suites, and other features contribute to an aggressive energy-saving climate management philosophy.

The spirit of the site, with its cultural and historical background, its climate and morphology, its flora and resources, determines the creative process.

Indeed, the resort not only uses wood chips for biomass heating but nearby wood suppliers can drop waste chips through the building’s green roof for a fast, easy, and environmentally-friendly refueling.

Around the corner from the hotel, a gorgeous hydroelectric power plant (built by Monovolume architects) taps a clean, never-ending power

source—a waterfall—that would otherwise be wasted. Here is a power plant that blends seamlessly into the hillside rather than blighting the landscape. One look and you come to understand that energy solutions can be opportunities for creativity.

Biodynamic Winemaking

  • Just a bit down the road from Vigilius Mountain Resort, a biodynamic vineyard called Manicor is run by the soft-spoken Michael Goess-Enzenberg. Enzenberg, who happens to be a count (a title he cares little about except as it relates to what he sees as his inherent responsibility to care for the land), produces wines that adhere to the tenets of Austrian anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner. In other words, a farmer should grow in harmony with nature rather than trying to conquer it with chemicals. As a result, Enzenberg is proving to the world that biodynamic winemaking can create an extremely stylish and sophisticated product.

  • Respect nature and try to produce healthy foods. It’s what we live from, and what we work for.

  • The challenge: Create a natural blend between comfort and design, while at the same time adhering to a strict set of sustainability initiatives. This is what architect Matteo Thun faced as he set about designing the Vigilius Mountain Resort. When it comes to minimizing environmental impact, it’s easy for us on the sidelines to cry out “no compromise!” But what if it were your own money or professional reputations at risk? Would you be tempted to cut corners, perhaps just a little bit, to ensure that your guests received every possible comfort? With this in mind, behold what Thun has accomplished: The challenge of blending sustainability with comfort was not only met, but exceeded. Here there is no compromise, just a glorious architectural wonder at one with its environment.

  • Sustainability, wellbeing, and comfort were the main aims of this project and it was really impressive to see how they achieved all of these components.
