      About Your Stay

Restored from decaying, abandoned ancient caves in the village of Matera in southern Italy, Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita offers guests a new take on authenticity. Swedish-Italian entrepreneur, hotelier, and philanthropist Daniele Kihlgren breathed new life into the caves while honoring the lives spent dwelling in their depths. Situated in the arch of the Italian boot, Matera—a UNESCO World Heritage site—is not widely known by foreigners. Preserving the existing architecture and local aesthetic, Kihlgren has created 18 impeccable rooms in the oldest part of the ancient cave dwellings. In order to provide the proper standards of luxury, he composed a synthesis that integrates traditional design made from local materials with a minimum of contemporary amenities. The site was meticulously taken apart, entirely wired and piped, and finally reassembled, with each stone returned to its original location. The result is an architectural masterpiece that provides a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The caves, or sassi, in the village of Matera, are a series of dwellings carved into the stone face of the hill on which Matera is perched. These wonders had been long abandoned but their legacy has been passed down through generations. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the sassi were scored out of the rocks to satisfy the basic survival needs of local agrarians. What Daniele Kihlgren found upon entering were beautifully carved arches in heavily pocked stone walls and floors covered in rubble. He took on the project with unparalleled sensitivity, not only preserving the original spaces, but renovating with traditional, local tools and construction materials. As the furnishing was minimal, additions have been made mostly along the cave walls of the rooms. In this way they are subtly integrated into the structure. Contemporary amenities were added only were necessary and when they could be invisibly incorporated.

      Dwelling in History

Using indigenous materials to create seating, beds, light fixtures, bathing areas, and kitchenettes in some rooms, Kihlgren has composed an accommodation experience that is entirely unique. The elegant arches over pocked stone walls and the heavy wooden portals present in the rooms and common area are distinct markers and monuments to the preservation of civilizations long gone.

Sextantio Le Grotte Della’s eighteen rooms are spacious and as hidden under powerful archways as they are open and full of light. Facing the dramatic backdrop of the Park of the Murgia and its gorgeous rock-hewn churches, each is individualized according to its existing architectural frame.
