Ancient Roman aristocrats flocked to Bormio for thousands of years to relax and rejuvenate in the town's thermal spas. Today, people travel to this Italian mountain town to ski, shop, and exploreand then visit those same thermal spas. Even with its illustrious past, this historic hamlet still has room for something new: Eden Hotel, a stylish and elegant destination that showcases the beauty of its mountain setting. The hotel's four buildings and enclosing chestnut fence form a graceful single structure that harmonizes with its environment. Staircases and transparent catwalks connect the buildings, giving visitors the best possible access to Bormio's panoramic mountain views. Further emphasizing this dialogue with nature is the lush, sustainable garden surrounding the hotelit's nearly as enchanting as the one that gives Eden its name. At the hotel's Umami restaurant, nature again plays center stage. With a focus on fresh produce from the landscape, chef Antonio Burruso, one of Italy's brightest culinary stars, creates dishes that harmoniously balance traditional specialties from Italy's south with bold, innovative culinary ideas.

      ARCHITECTURE

Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and Partners

Four tall, narrow buildings form a line in the valley. Citterio decided to go the unexpected route, straying away from the kitsch of “Natale con la neve” (Christmas with snow) in favor of a more ambitious, modern sensibility. Eden was designed with sustainability in mind: glass panels keep rooms warm, as do insulating packages around the perimeter that maximize passive heat exchange.

      INTERIOR DESIGN

      Modern Mountaineering

The interior concept features warm earth tones and natural materials such as wood and leather. A fireplace flanked by a skin rug, geometric wooden tables, and a footstool crafted from branches sets the mood, inviting guests to enjoy the afternoon with a snifter of brandy.

In the guestrooms, the natural setting is amplified by wood-slatted walls and rustic plaid headboards. The overall atmosphere is one of purity and refinement, a tasteful play on the idea of a cozy Italian mountain villa.

      Antonio Citterio

Antonio Citterio is an award-winning architect and a recognized name in the industrial design sector. The Eden is Citterio's first mountain hotel, and he has a special relationship to it: he spent many summers in the Italian Alps as a child. In designing the Eden, he sought to provide a cozy, homey feel for guests while avoiding kitsch. Asked about his creation, he said, ‘An architect is like a tailor. They design outfits for clients. Some they would wear themselves; others they would not. This, I would wear.’
