      Our Creative Past

      At the Heart of Artistry

Near the lovely GombitHotel, in the medieval Italian city of Bergamo, the handiwork of local artisans is putting a new stamp on old-world quality.

In the medieval, walled city of Bergamo, Italy, close to the Lombard lakes and the ski resorts of Northern Italy, Design Hotels’ member GombitHotel literally is at the crossroads of history. Adjoined by a monumental 13th-century watchtower that rises above the old town’s clustered rooftops, the hotel sits at the intersection of two ancient Roman roads. It’s a setting not lost on owner and Bergamo native Nadia Galeotti. “The entire historical building comes back to life. It's a sign of continuity through the ages,” she says.

Our purpose is to maintain the nice things. Nowadays, the youth lifestyle means everything is disposable.

Indeed, there is an appreciation for the ways of the past at GombitHotel—the craft, the avoidance of waste—that gives the hotel its soul. Here, original wooden ceilings aged hundreds of years create a monastic ambiance, while handmade textiles, primarily lightweight linens, in unostentatious earth tones, help complete the scene. This is a place where working in the manner of one’s forefathers still thrives.

If the goal of GombitHotel was to become a creative exchange, a platform for local artists, and, above all, a space for cultural discovery, then the result is a resounding success. Austerity and natural aesthetics not only thrive within the walls here, but outside as well. In Bergamo, itself, the art of upholstery lives on with artisans using real wool and not synthetic fillers, thus ensuring that unhealthy chemicals are not in the furniture. Likewise, the blacksmith here produces metalwork with iron sourced from the Bergamo area, thus supporting the local economy as well as minimizing transportation emissions. The practices here are old, but the results are bold, beautiful, and beneficial to us all.

      • Local Bergamo upholsterer Giuseppe Carrara is the kind of man who hands you a piece of wool and says, “Feel it. It’s alive!” And when you do just that, you get exactly what he means. After all, for his entire life Carrara has practiced furniture repair with the care and pride one would expect to find in a celebrated artist. No matter that those who celebrate him are not museumgoers but his customers, folks who know that the bottom line at work here is not profit but a love and respect for the product that is being created.

Raffaele Scuri, a local Bergamo blacksmith, is also a man who forges a hopeful future out of the artistry of the past. In this age of automation and giant factories with their polluting smokestacks, how nice to know that somewhere close by there is still a man with a bellows, an anvil, and a hammer producing quality work in the same manner as those who came centuries before him.

In a world where the value of the craftsmanship has been all but lost, it’s refreshing to see these two traditional skilled tradesmen keeping it alive.

      • This is a very important profession because there is a story behind this craft.
