Like an urban hybrid flower, the intimate 20-room Park Pod, Chennai started as a seed that grew and blossomed into a completely original entity. Priya Paul, chairperson of The Park Hotels, along with Atul Malhotra and Vikram Phadke of India's pioneering luxury designer shop, Evoluzione, created the bi-level glass and concrete building. Located discreetly on Khader Nawaz Khan Road, the hotel is set back from the road, while the curvaceous leafy branches that embrace the building give the feeling of an organic oasis. The glass facade and ceiling allow dappled light to flood into its public spaces, giving much of the building a sense of transparency. At night, there is a more mysterious ambience as the hotel's reception area is illuminated with a warm glow that turns this calm sanctuary into a sensual hotspot attracting fashionable locals and travelers.

      Praise the Red Lantern

A color scheme of black, white, and red runs throughout the hotel’s interiors and exteriors, from the glowing red lanterns that lead to the stand-alone, glass box of a reception room, to the red-tiled lap pool in the open-air back courtyard. This, along with the mix of full and partial glass facades, erases the borders between interior and exterior space. Indeed, the partial glass facades and sunroofs allow the hotel to be flooded with light and opens up the space to the outside, from the dramatic crooked tree branches above, to the tastemakers walking by on Khader Nawaz Khan Road.

The Chennai style gurus at Evoluzione arranged for the linens, cushions, and throws to be custom made by Abraham & Thakore. Lacquered black tables, meanwhile, are set with Thomas Keller’s ‘Point’ crockery and Riedel glassware, and are surrounded by Louis Ghost’ chairs.

      Evoluzione

The Park Pod, Chennai perfectly captures the excitement of modern-day India, weaving together contemporary materials and design objects to build a space that changes mood with the shifting of light and shadow. Dramatic deep red screens for the private dining area, for example, were created by Indian fashion designer Rajesh Pratap Singh.
