Inspired by the traditions of Indian film—glamour, performance, and drama—The Park Chennai was constructed on the former premises of the Gemini Film Studios, ensuring the continuation of years of theater. Typical of Priya Paul's distinctive design vision, she asked the young artist Hemi Bawa to create an artwork of welcoming lotuses on the hotel's porch. From there guests are beckoned through to the sleek atrium area, where pale cream lime stone, aqua leather and cocoa velvets generate a restful ambience. The atmosphere radically changes at night: image projections, light, and sound transform the atrium into a hub of activity for Chennai's chic elite. The 214 guestrooms remain havens of calm, with muted colors and gentle lighting. Beech wood floors and frosted glass contrast with local flavors such as coconut shell inlaid tables and parchment lamps, making The Park Chennai an entertaining and inspiring mix of international talents.

      Hirsch Bedner & Associates

When Park Hotels took over the former film studio site in 2002, they made sure to artfully weave the locale’s legacy into Chennai’s concept. Los Angeles architects Hirsch Bedner & Associates can be credited with pulling off a hotel that pays homage to its glittering movie past without dissolving into Bollywood kitsch. Artworks with a lotus flower theme by leading Indian artist Hemi Bawa greets visitors into the massive lobby that also includes oversized screens upon which an ever-changing roster of films is projected. However, when night falls on the city of almost 8 million, the lobby turns from an oasis of calm into one of Chennai’s hottest spots where locals mingle with the international clientele.

      Classic Cinema Meets Contemporary Chic

The interior design of the hotel’s guestrooms is light and breezy. Modern furniture in muted colors is set upon beech wood floors. Film posters from the 1960s that are scattered throughout the hotel hallways are among the few direct references to the Chennai’s past, ensuring that Hirsch Bedner & Associates’ cool, contemporary design remains the star of the show.
