    Ekies All Senses Resort

Kick off your shoes, wiggle your toes in the sand, and slip into the languid pace of Ekies All Senses Resort, a pared-down retreat that takes a barefoot approach to holiday relaxation. Celebrating its Greek roots and stunning natural location, the simple design lets the pristine surroundings shine and embraces the notion that luxury should be measured by one's ecological footprint. On an unspoiled beach in Vourvourou on the east side of Sithonia—one of three peninsulas in Halkidiki on the translucent waters of the Aegean Sea—the resort is surrounded by rocky islands, caves, crystal waters, sandy beaches, and pine tree forests. The design blends with this idyllic landscape through the use of natural, unrefined materials, such as solid wood and Greek grey marble. The 69 rooms and suites weave Greek tradition with distinctive designs, while organic forms, sustainability, and an ethos of minimal waste complete the resort's eco-philosophy.

    Peaceful Pleasures

Alexandra Efstathiadou spent 11 years transforming Ekies All Senses Resort—a hotel she used to visit with her parents as a child—into an environmentally-friendly property that presents Greek culture in a fresh light. Throughout the renovation process, various Greek architects and firms took part. The result was three unique ‘houses’, where tradition co-exists with pared-back design, playful pops of color, and custom-designed illustrations. Designed to blend harmoniously with this landscape, eco-friendly materials were used throughout, from the non-toxic paints to the ecological Coco-mat mattresses and minimal waste philosophy. Each of the 69 rooms and suites has a pool, sea or garden view, and each is unique in terms of color and decorations.

    Vangelis Liakos

Efstathiadou’s husband Vangelis Liakos is the co-founder and art-director of award-winning design agency Beetroot, which played a big part in creating the visual identity of the renovated resort. Relaxation and comfort are top priority with elements such as huge cuddly sofas, hammocks, and loungers blending with the best in contemporary design pieces by Philippe Starck and Achille Castiglioni.

Components of Greek tradition are woven into the concept through playful illustrations and typography depicting Greek poet Aesop’s fables on the bedroom walls. Although the surroundings are lavish, there is nothing excessive in the décor and a natural, laid-back atmosphere is achieved.

Alexandra Efstathiadou says that renovating Ekies All Senses Resort was a childhood dream. She spent nine years working with different architects and interior designers to transform the resort into a showpiece for her own culture, “I want to present Greece through design and fabric. I want a history behind it, but in a modern way,” she says.
