The Cycladic island of Folegandros plays host to Anemi Hotel with all the drama of a Greek myth. Against the rocky terrain of the village of Karavostasis, the hotel makes a memorable impression with a dozen two-floor whitewashed buildings, unique in their delicate combination of Cycladic architecture and contemporary Greek lines. Inside, 44 rooms and suites are peppered with furniture by the likes of Charles & Ray Eames, B&B Italia and Vitra, brought together by designer Stavros Papayiannis who has successfully injected Anemi’s interiors with an underlying mood of simplicity and modernity. Every guestroom has been designed individually, emphasized by one-of-a-kind photos by Margarita Nikitaki capturing the summer life of Folegandros, which frame each bed. Augmenting this mood of local spirit are traditional Greek elements, seen through numerous decorative objects, and rustic wooden ceilings.

    ARCHITECTURE

    Cycladic Architecture & Modern Lines

Seamlessly reflecting the island’s tranquility, architect Alexandros Samaras’ design for Anemi Hotel has harmoniously blended the expansive complex with the natural landscape. Amalgamating elements of old Cycladic architecture with modern Greek lines, Samaras has created a property that is as authentic as it is contemporary. Limiting Anemi’s height to only two storeys throughout has ensured that the 16,000 sq meter hotel does not interrupt the serenity of the surrounding scenery, where low-level structures are commonplace. Samaras was also meticulous in echoing the hallmarks of local architecture. For instance, the smooth-edged corners and whitewashed exteriors of neighboring cube houses are omnipresent in all of the hotel’s structures, and the addition of verandas and balconies let the outside in.

    INTERIOR DESIGN

    Clean & Effortless

Mirroring the simplicity of the hotel’s exterior, Anemi’s interiors are clean and effortless. A white-on-white palette is found in both public spaces and accommodations. Color is introduced by designer Stavros Papayiannis by way of handmade carpets from the east coast of Folegandros, and furniture from a multitude of renowned designers, such as Flos, B&B Italia and Charles & Ray Eames.

Renowned in Athens — where he still lives and works — he’s distinguished by his unique approach to design, likening the designer/client relationship to that of a patient and a doctor, no doubt a lingering hangover of his medical training.

    Stavros Papayiannis

Like his work, nothing about Stavros Papayiannis is straightforward. Having initially studied Anatomic Pathology, the Greek maverick did a complete about-turn in 1988. Co-founding the multifaceted design studio DeArte, the completely self-taught designer took on interior design, graphic design and art commissions before establishing his current company, Stage Design Office, where Anemi is only his third hotel project.
