      About your stay

      SIDE

Located near the Alster Lake and the city’s shopping district, SIDE hotel sets a soaring stage for a dramatic lighting concept by theater virtuoso Robert Wilson. The stark drama is softened through interiors by Milan designer Matteo Thun, whose rounded surfaces and carefully chosen colors create aesthetic warmth and vitality. Guests and in-the-know locals enjoy the lounge's voluptuous, round furnishings and [m]eatery bar + restaurant, where an 800-degree infrared oven and an exclusive dry-aging process cook up delicious steaks with quality meats from Argentina, the United States, and Germany. While the color palette in the bar is a dark and stormy affair, guests enjoy soothing and creamy hues in their rooms. The generous public spaces feature bold tones and lush velvets, such as energetic oranges and warm yellow walls in the restorative spa treatment rooms.

      Architecture

      Jan Störmer

Jan Störmer’s glass and steel architecture is nestled in an area of Hamburg where classy urban chic meets established normality. Though only eleven stories high, SIDE evokes visions of luminescent skyscrapers. The SIDE Hotel's atrium lobby is encased by frosted glass, stretching eight stories high like a luminescent sliver between skyscrapers. Hovering above the futuristic atrium is the 8th floor sky lounge, where Milan designer Matteo Thun suggests weightlessness with improbably curved furniture and floating disk lighting. Stretching even further beyond, the SIDE's lounge terrace presents a panoramic view across both Hamburg’s gritty port and its genteel lakes.

Every piece of furniture and decorative element has been painstakingly selected or specially developed as part of the overall design concept of SIDE. Buttery creams and sumptuous browns serve as the soothing canvas in guest rooms, against which the Italian designer cleverly juxtaposes public areas using splashes of garish color.

      Interior Design

      Ever-changing intensity

A spectacular light show designed by iconic light choreographer Robert Wilson pulses through the hotel's soaring atrium with ever-changing intensity, mimicking the breaking of waves. Against the backdrop of Matteo Thun’s sober minimalism, the interior is softened by voluptuously round furnishings and natural touches.

      Gregor Gerlach

Having grown up in hotel development alongside his father, Hamburg native Gregor Gerlach knew the business was in his blood. He is currently the CEO of the world-class Seaside Hotels, an eight-property boutique hotel chain promoting tranquility and relaxation across Germany and Spain that was initially launched by his father, Theo. Gerlach spent four years with McKinsey after receiving his MBA in junior business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago. He was also an original investor in and founder of Vapiano, a successful Italian restaurant franchise, and continues to serve as the chairman of the board. On weekends Gerlach can be seen relaxing at the Hamburg Polo Club, among his favorite places to be, he admits. His jeweled seaside resorts are a close second.
