Walking The Walk

Setting a Quiet Example

By leading in ways that are not always evident to their consumers, Roomers is demonstrating that if something matters to the world, it matters to them.

Few guests of the provocative, trendsetting Roomers, in Frankfurt, think of kindergarten when they pass through this hotel’s doors. But fortunately Roomers owners Micky Rosen and Alex Urseanu do. Quietly, without much attention, they are putting local concerns – in this case an international kindergarten for immigrants – at the forefront of their affairs. Though this particular school has little money for upkeep, Roomers regularly donates manpower, in the form of maintenance and upkeep, to ensure that the children can thrive in a safe and vibrant learning environment.

Business will inevitably integrate social responsibility. In a city known for finance, Roomers is not only working behind the scenes, it's opening the minds of its consumers.

Local concerns are, of course, among the most important when it comes to setting an example for the businesses around you, as well as for your own customers. Which explains the honey that Roomers serves its guests. Yes, the hotel could afford to import the most expensive brand from some gloriously remote locale (at a steep environmental cost, by the way), but instead it has installed a beehive on its rooftop to produce its own honey.

By now we are all very familiar with the request from hotels to reuse our towels so as to avoid water waste, but Roomers expands this notion greatly.

It has hired a laundry company that filters water in such a way that there is no waste. In short, water used for laundry is 100 percent recycled. This not only saves water, but ensures that there is no excess waste that could further harm the environment. And to further safeguard against waste, Roomers has also hired a company to monitor and reduce its energy consumption.

As a guest of Roomers, you might not be aware of all the behind-the-scenes activity that is meant to create a better local and global environment, but Micky Rosen and Alex Urseanu are fine with that. They know. And in many important ways, so does the world all around them.

  • “We are all here to have fun together and take care of each other.”

This is not exactly the type of wisdom you’d expect to hear from a businessman in Germany’s financial capital (Frankfurt), but it’s exactly what you get from Hans Reitz, a social business entrepreneur and Founder & Managing Director of Grameen Creative Lab.

Though he comes from a small village in Bavaria, Reitz now works with the likes of Nobel Peace Prize winners and social business pioneers, such as Yunus, which helped create micro financing for the developing world. In fact, one such project in rural Bangladesh was a winner of the prestigious Ashden Award for its efforts to help bring electricity to remote villages. Similarly, Reitz is also involved with Little Sun, a global venture to get clean, affordable light to the 1.6 billion people worldwide who have no access to the electrical grid.

Reitz’s personal journey has taken him to the streets of India, where he spent seven years learning firsthand the problems of poverty, before taking his learnings into many fields. In this video, Reitz offers “7 Principles of Social Business” – a state of mind and a smart way of doing business.
