Interspersing cozy architecture with sleek modernity, the Gerbermühle creates an amorous alliance between medieval and contemporary Frankfurt. Originally a flour mill built in the 1520’s, the property contrasts masculine elements, such as exposed beams and mezzanines, with feminine, ultramodern magenta lighting in its charming rustic stairwells. The restaurant's lodge-like atmosphere, complete with antlers on the wall and old-fashioned light fixtures, makes it the ultimate place to sip regional apple wine, while the modern bedrooms and suites evoke the best of European hospitality with handsome leather furniture and glossy parquet floors. The old-world-meets-new feeling continues outdoors: Along the river Main is a lovely 500-seat summer garden that's long been a favorite meeting place for locals. Yes, it was near this embankment that German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe met the love of his life. This elegant 18-room hotel now carries on its literary legacy on the outskirts of Germany's financial capital.

    Architecture

    Thoroughly Modern Mill

Gerbermühle's design respects the property's history but also takes a leap into modernity with the latest design and technology. The lobby features exposed beams and mezzanines that suggest a stylized version of the innards of a massive skyscraper, while the bar features old stone walls and riveted leather furniture. From the outside, one instantly senses a bright airiness that belies the building’s history as a centuries-old working mill. Luxuriously situated on the banks of the idyllic Main river, it’s no wonder that this stately property offers a sense of historical romance.

    Interior Design

    Front Design

The Gerbermühle's old post-beam construction is never hidden, but is painted to match various rooms’ color schemes in a nod to sleek contemporaneity. Meanwhile, dashes of trendy design accent the property—just one example is the full-sized horse lamp by Front Design in the lobby.
