Hotel Zoo, once the pride of Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm, has risen again following extensive renovations by American design team Dayna Lee and Ted Berner. Together, they have revitalized the iconic venue by embracing its past glory while installing a firm sense of modernity. Built in 1889 as a private residence, the building’s legacy as a hotel began in 1911. Once the official VIP hotel to the Berlin International Film Festival, the grand catwalk was tread by the likes of Romy Schneider and Sophia Loren. The building’s re-incarnation sees soaring ceilings restored and the original brick and steel work revealed. Touches of fantasy permeate the public spaces, where Alice-in-Wonderland whimsy is invoked with playful proportions. The spacious rooms and suites are equally eccentric, featuring bespoke furnishings and bold Berliner spirit. Luxurious fabrics and contemporary furniture are mixed with keepsakes from the past, as though traces of the original family still remain. At the heart of the hotel the welcoming Living Room entices guests to linger, and a double-sided fireplace flickers both inside and into the open-air Winter Garden. Local DJ talent spins in the lively Grace Bar, home to the city’s creatives and scenesters from near and far.

    Rooms & Suites

The 130 rooms and 14 suites in the historic building of Hotel Zoo Berlin are designed to pamper. Plush, heavy curtains, rich carpets, George Smith sofas, and sizeable platform beds create a glamorous feel worthy of 1920s Berlin. The suites feature dual rain showers, a freestanding bathtub with fireplace, a powder room, and even slippers by Maison Martin Margiela. Each room and suite has its own layout and character. Some feature open plan bathrooms, exposed brick or curved walls, while others have steps that set the stage for the one-of-a-kind interiors. The panorama rooms offer views of either Berlin’s famed Ku’Damm boulevard or across the rooftops to the “Theater des Westens”.

    Dayna Lee

The conceptual design of Hotel Zoo Berlin has been created by Dayna Lee. Along with partner Ted Berner and the talented team at Powerstrip Studio, Lee has developed a unique style for which the studio has become renowned: luxurious but never overly decadent, elegant but comfortable and welcoming. Well-rehearsed and multidisciplinary, the studio specializes in conceptual design with projects in the USA, Europe, Asia, and Caribbean—ranging from resorts to urban towers—as well as boutique hotels in Berlin, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and similarly hip destinations. The Rhode Island School of Design graduate started out in advertising and has gone on to work in the television, fashion, and motion picture industries. The Emmy-nominated designer even worked on a private concert for Sting in Tuscany!
