Mixing old with the new, the architects recycled the rammed-earth wall and combined it with concrete to strengthen the building. In a purely modern flourish, the restaurant resides in a steel structure that was added to the main building.

Architecture

Zhao Yang Architects

It took 1,095 days to complete the sensitive restoration of this ancient structure 3,600 meters above sea level. While the architectural language of the hotel is traditional, albeit supported by modern practices, the interiors offer smooth lines, clean angles, and a controlled nude palette that speaks of the now.

Asian Hygge

Sunrays stream through large windows that frame the mountains, hitting rough-hewn furniture, textured linens, and uneven concrete walls to create a profound sense of calm. Tibetan references abound in the hotel’s three fireplaces, Buddhist murals, salvaged doors, and deep wooden window frames.

In one of the best instances of wabi-sabi outside of Japan, Sunyata proudly bears its aged walls, earthy aesthetic, and restrained décor.
