MINISTRY OF DESIGN

Standout architectural elements highlighted in gold paint shimmer against the dark backdrop of the hotel’s multiple structures. The prominence of these highlights suggests an informal “cataloguing” of key architectural details that bring into focus the distinction between the historical versus the contemporary: a subtle juxtaposition rich in tension arising from the adaptive reuse design. Spaces between the buildings are treated graphically with an “ice-ray” lattice pattern inspired by traditional Chinese screens.

WILD WHIMSY

Unusual and transformative, Ministry of Design’s interiors are dotted with art installations across the compound and within the rooms and suites.

These works of friendly animals (foxes, rabbits, deer) take on a human-like aspect, demonstrating a sense of curiosity for the lake and the attractions around Beijing. Other art installations in the hotel's public spaces focus more keenly on the theme of the transcendence of Chinese culture.
