Architecture Yorick Piette
The wooden roofs, traditional palha (straw), and white walls create a bright and refined atmosphere. The architect also made abundant use of white-cement brick walls, assorted palm trees (buriti, carnaúba, açaí, coconut), handmade tiles, and local hardwoods (tatajuba, canela de velho, pau d’arco) in a way that maximizes natural ventilation and reconnects guests with the surrounding nature.
Interior design Mark Dixon
The interior aesthetic could be described as tropical minimalism, with natural materials abounding, inviting hammocks swaying gently on private terraces, and curvaceous design pieces inspired by the sand dunes outside. All the cabinets, cupboards, closets, storage spaces, benches, lamps, and tables were handmade by the hotel’s designer, head chef, and carpenter Mark Dixon
Offbeat Destinations A wonderland of sand dunes and lagoons
The village is perched on the edge of the sprawling 1,500-square-kilometer Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, a wonderland of sand dunes and turquoise lagoons that welcomes swimmers, sunbathers, and explorers, as well as kitesurfers who come from all over to enjoy optimal wind conditions and flat waters.
