Rooms 72 / Architecture Peter Lorenz / Interior Design Terence Conran / The Original Hans Christoph List

A pitch perfect combination of history and modern design awaits you at Das Triest, a former coach station used by travelers en route to the spas of Trieste. Austrian architect Peter Lorenz and British interior designer Sir Terence Conran joined forces to preserve parts of the original structure, combining elements of imperial elegance with sober lines. The result is a sharp contrast to the city’s charming, late 19th-century Art Nouveau architecture. Subtle nautical touches like old ship railings and flags feature throughout the hotel, evoking an indirect homage to the port city of Trieste that carries over into the amply-appointed 72 guestrooms and 16 suites, which feature porthole mirrors and windows in the bathrooms. Specially commissioned photographs of Trieste and Vienna further celebrate a connection to the building's historic role in international travel. Today's travelers yearning for reserved nostalgia combined with modern comforts will have found what they're looking for.

    Rooms & Suites

It’s rare that one gets to stay in a room designed by a legend, but the 72 guestrooms and suites at Das Triest is the exception, offering interiors crafted by none other than Sir Terence Conran. Rooms come in a wide assortment of sizes, from Superior, which are suitable for up to three people and offers views of a garden or the city center, to the massive Triest Suite, which includes specially made furnishings and such delights as a dining table and side tables by B&B Italia, a sofa by Wittmann, lounge chair tables by Minotti, and “Miss K” beside table lamps designed by Philippe Starck. Other room options abound, but all offer inspiring design choices made by Sir Conran himself.

Peter Lorenz & Sir Terence Conran

The modern architecture of this former coach station stands out amongst Vienna's mix of monumental facades and late 19th-century Art Nouveau buildings. Austrian architect Peter Lorenz and British interior designer Sir Terence Conran preserved parts of the original structure, combining elements of imperial elegance with sober lines. Cross-vaulted rooms give the building a distinctive flair, hearkening back to its history as a coach station. Sprawling suites and generous guestroom sizes exude the expansive elan of luxurious travel—referencing the building’s heritage while pleasing the discerning tastes of today’s traveler.

    Modern Design Classics

Great care was also taken in selecting and pairing designer pieces by a host of renowned manufacturers and designers including Conran himself, B&B Italia and Casa Milano. The interiors strike a distinctly contemporary note: Every upholstered piece by the Austrian firm Wittmann is handcrafted. Sir Terence Conran’s choice of instantly recognizable near modern classics includes also Artemide light fixtures and table lamps by Philippe Starck for Flos.
