David Seargeant

The local touch

His success in hospitality is driven by a respect for local culture, making bold decisions, and the need to spark inspiration among his guests—all hallmarks of the QT brand.

Those who do not personally know David Sergeant, the CEO and Group Managing Director of Event Hospitality & Entertainment Ltd. until his recent retirement, could be excused for considering him to be one of those dry and stuffy corporate types whose eye is fixed only on the bottom line. Yet spend a few minutes chatting with him and you’ll see that Seargeant, with his eco-conscious, community-minded ideas, is a far cry from your typical traditionalist executive.

Take, for example, a recent hire by the Australian: a “forager,” whose sole job is to establish relationships with farmers and growers nationwide to ensure only the freshest seasonal produce winds up at QT properties.

I never made the decision to get into the hotel business—it was almost predetermined—and I just knew hospitality would be my life.

But if an on-staff forager isn’t ample evidence of his community spirit, then consider, if you will, the bees. “We launched a beehive initiative at select QT properties that help boost natural pollination and protect wild bee genetics, while also helping to pollinate QT’s completely sustainable rooftop gardens, which supply the restaurants with organic herbs and vegetables,” Seargeant explains.

And then there was his drive to support and showcase local Australian artists and designers throughout the QT hotels, something one feels profoundly at QT Sydney. Seargeant sums it up this way: “We work towards forming creative partnerships to support the local film, fashion, design, and architecture community. We don’t work without the support of local people.”

Seargeant’s passion for hospitality, for putting his soul into his work, stems from his early roots. “My family traveled regularly and I was introduced to the world of hotels from quite a young age,” he says. “I never made the decision to get into the hotel business—it was almost predetermined—and I just knew hospitality would be my life.” But it was his later travels as an adult that opened his eyes to what could be achieved through creativity and bold vision.

“I was fortunate to be visiting New York shortly after Ian Schrager opened his groundbreaking Morgans Hotel, and I was truly inspired and believed that this design-driven, experience-focused hotel concept represented the future,” he explains.

It’s interesting to note that for Seargeant the ultimate guest experience needn’t be anything more than a thoughtful personal touch. For example, there was the time he arrived at the Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas. “It was a 100-plus-degree afternoon,” he notes, “and within five minutes of checking into my room a perfectly groomed and uniformed staff member arrived with freshly made lemonade, beautifully chilled and presented. It made for a very special welcome.”

Little wonder then that QT is all about the experience, an attitude Seargeant instilleds and fostereds in each member of his team. “There is an energy running through our hotels fueled by our incredible talent and our collaborations with likeminded people and brands,” Seargeant says. “I engaged with local creative partnerships across art, design, entertainment, food and beverage, styling, and spa.” In other words, the QT experience, like the man behind it, is as far from dry and stuffy as one could hope to be.
