Hotel Skeppsholmen is housed in two centuries-old Royal Marine barracks on a green island in the center of Stockholm. When the buildings were constructed more than three centuries ago, the builders used materials recycled from ruined castles throughout Sweden. Today, these structures are landmarks: When they were transformed into a hotel in 2009, great care was taken to work with a light touch. Most changes were made to be reversible so that the buildings can be returned to their original state if necessary. Original brick floors were discovered, and floorboards were restored and reused. The 77-room hotel plans to keep pushing its sustainability program forward, earning Nordic Swan Ecolabel level four for its efforts thus far. Hotel Skeppsholmen benefits from Stockholm’s ambitious environmental policies, taking advantage of the city’s renewable energy, clean tap water, and composting program. The kitchen has recently installed KITRO, a hardware that measures and analyzes kitchen waste so the hotel can reduce excess. The team is currently building an herb and flower garden where it hopes to put its compost to good use.
As the hotel is set inside government-protected buildings, most changes were made to be reversible. Many original features were discovered and preserved in the process.
The kitchen has installed KITRO technology to measure and attempt to reduce food waste. The team separates and recycles waste and compost food waste.
Hotel Skeppsholmen uses only renewable electricity.
No plastic bottles are used and guests are encouraged to drink the tap water. Water flow in all basins and showers is limited to reduce water consumption.
The kitchen strives to use local, seasonal products from small producers whenever possible. The hotel sources honey from its own hives and is currently working on an herb and flower garden.
The hotel encourages guests to use local transportation. Electric bikes are on hand for guests to use during their stay.
Management aims to create a workplace where everyone works together as a team, has fun, and feels valued. The hotel sends out a weekly letter with information and nice guest reviews.
We spoke with the team at Hotel Skeppsholmen to learn the latest on the hotel’s conscious journey.
Sustainability is an important part of our strategy. For us, it means minimizing our environmental impact and developing a healthy working environment while giving our guests a special experience at the same time.
We always try to be aware of what is happening on our island and in the city. We pass that information onto our guests so they can experience the best of Stockholm.
The biggest hurdle for us is the consumption of amenities. To combat that, we have replaced single-use amenities with refillable dispensers in all hotel rooms. Disposable bottles are available at the front desk upon request. We also find it challenging to communicate our initiatives with our guests in the best, most tasteful way.
