MAVIDA BALANCE HOTEL & SPA

ZELL AM SEE, AUSTRIA
ARCHITECTURE / INTERIOR DESIGN
Niki Szilagyi
Evi Märklstetter
Architect Niki Szilagyi designed the Mavida for a sense of flowing privacy, blending new holistic architecture with largely natural materials. The entire hotel is conceived as a homogenous space, a balance that always places the individual at the centre. Wrapped in sensual textures this is a serious comfort zone.

The lobby, which is painted in the hotel’s signature shade of orange, features sleek modern lines rather than old-fashioned grandeur. Dipped in the warm cosy light that the elegant Italian Flos standing lamps provide, the understated armchairs sit comfortably on the polished beige natural stone floor. An overall light look extends to the inviting brown leather seating islands that flow along one side of the lobby floor – areas that allow discreet gatherings and are at the same time part of the communal space. Framed by structural pillars, the reception desk is not the usual imposing presence but is situated off to one side to underline the more intimate, personal approach as well.

The 47 guestrooms are unusually large and feature an equally unusual arrangement by the bed from Casamilano being placed right in the middle of each room. Midnight-blue and burgundy textiles have been carefully chosen to team up with the particular abstract floral pattern of the scattered cushions by British textile-designer Tricia Guild. Balconies extend out seamlessly from floor-length windows and doors so that guests may feel simultaneously centred both in the hotel itself and in the spectacular mountains just outside. Feet are happily grounded on lusciously thick natural fibre rugs that simply soothe the senses even more. The interior design scheme of wood and stone has been chosen for the bathrooms as well – but real bathing pleasure is found in the state-of-the-art spa. Massive blocks of slate create the dramatic backdrop for the main characteristic of flowing water and also for utter relaxation. Handcrafted elm tree furniture set in a smooth palette of earthy tones complete the deluxe feel-good look. If you are feeling particularly invigorated and energised, then Lake Zell at the foot of the surrounding alpine peaks up to 9,000 feet high both eagerly await you.
