In the centre of Alicante, close to the popular La Esplanada avenue as well as El Postiguet beach, the grand façade of the hotel Hospes Amérigo draws your attention skywards to the arched neo-Gothic windows and Juliet balconies.
The exceptional property has experienced previous incarnations as a Dominican convent, then a complex of commercial offices and lastly an apartment block before being saved and wholly refurbished and updated by the Hospes Design Team. Parts of the historic façade have been preserved as well as some old stones salvaged from the original convent structure that now form parts of the walls on each floor. The modern light-filled lobby gleams with polished white marble and glass surfaces, but the past is present again in the wrought iron work that surrounds the balcony above it.
Guestrooms have been decorated using a warm cosy palette of neutral colours and simple textures: Cream-coloured armchairs sit comfortably on pale hand-woven carpets and a touch of unobtrusive, bourgeois decorative elements probably would have pleased the mid-19th century residents of the Amérigo too. If you’re inspired by the romance of the Juliet balconies then simply head to the roof terrace from which the fantastic views of Alicante’s castle are best enjoyed lying in the heated pool and thus promise utter enchantment. |
