Given its breathtaking location between the sea and Bali’s sacred Mount Agung, it’s easy to see why the designers at Kerry Hill architects opted to enhance a free-flowing interaction between the buildings and surrounding nature in this seamless concept for the hotel.
A traditional alang alang thatched roof covers the lobby – whereby blades of grass are lashed around the wooden rafters to create a very neat and attractive finish. This natural feature is beautifully offset by polished ivory and coloured concrete floors. A lattice work screen of diagonally laid stones, a Kerry Hill trademark in the Alila hotels, is set up on either end of the lobby. Four two-storey buildings of cool white stone, that are lit up in geometric beams of warm orange tones after dark, hold the hotel’s guestrooms.
Each block is set at a 45° angle to the beach, allowing all of the rooms, and the two luxury suites in the building closest to the sea, to face the blue. On the other hand, setting your sights on the golden glow of lights shimmering against the cool turquoise of the pool is a pretty good alternative. Each guestroom building is an exercise in contrasting mass and lightness, and a skilful study of traditional and contemporary examples of Balinese architecture. Kerry Hill’s interior design concept is deeply influenced by the colours of the Bali Aga villages located in the nearby valleys. Carefully picked details including hand-woven textiles and local woods such as coconut give each room a warm look that is further emphasised by comforting shades of cream, sand and chocolate. Clean lines and a low profile sense of luxury all reflect the peace and quiet you will enjoy at this Balinese getaway. |
