LARS PIHL
Lars Pihl, one of the illuminated designers at Stockholm’s Nordic Light Hotel, spent his earliest career as a ski instructor in the French Alps before returning to Sweden and working in the advertising world for nearly two decades. For the past ten years or so, Pihl has worked with the hotel’s design team, creating changeable atmospheres with light, and often collaborating with artists.
MEET LARS
One late-fall morning on his morning jog, Nordic Light Hotel designer Lars Pihl had a revelation. An expanse of water stretched out in front of him, blanketed by fog. The sun broke through the mist, transforming the landscape into a blaze of yellow and orange. It was the inspiration for the Stockholm hotel’s light-driven interior. “I wanted the atmosphere to be changeable,” says Pihl. “It should relax people, or surprise them, depending on what mood people want to be in. It may even provoke a mood.” Pihl and his co-designer Jan Söder are now working on the ultimate hotel room with Dutch electronics company Philips, which even includes a “light shower.”
