Carlos Couturier once ran a citrus farm in his native San Rafael in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Moisés Micha spent 15 years working in New York’s investment-banking world. In 2000, the two friends launched Grupo Habita with their first property, Hotel Habita, in Mexico City. Consistently praised by both the design and travel worlds, the group has grown to seven-odd properties and has many more in the works. Couturier still oversees his farm, by the way.

“When our guests get here, they have this sensation that they belong here, somehow,” says hotelier Moisés Micha. “You’re not one more person like you are in bigger hotels.” This is just one reason why the Mexico-based Grupo Habita’s different destination properties are so successful. Another is how each hotel interacts with its physical surroundings, whether it’s a renovated water purification factory near Puebla or a restored 1920s apartment block-gone-hotspot in Mexico City’s tony Condesa district. “With all our properties, it’s almost like living a film,” says Carlos Couturier, nibbling on a salad.
