Brisbane, the capital of the Australian state of Queensland, got its start as a British penal settlement in 1824. Much has changed since then; Brisbane is now one of the largest Australian cities.

It boasts a lively student population and has been voted one of the Top 5 global music hotspots by the magazine Billboard in 2007. It is home to the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, a 2006 structure that is currently the largest museum for modern art in Australia. The city also hosts annual festivals, among them the Riverfestival, a cultural event that dominates Brisbane every September and has a fantastic fireworks display.
