The Town Hall Hotel & Apartments is a standout addition to the London hotel scene and illustrious hotelier Loh Lik Peng’s first hospitality project outside of Asia. The original Bethnal Green Town Hall has been converted into ninety-eight stunning guestrooms and apartments, seven spacious function rooms, a sleek bar and Viajante, the haute cuisine restaurant directed by celebrated chef Nuno Mendes.
Loh, known for his knack for selecting the best designers to spearhead each of his projects, has collaborated with the French firm, Rare Architecture, for the extremely challenging project of refreshing this complex historical landmark of a building. From the decaying frame of what was once the centre of local action, they have managed to juxtapose the graceful, traditionalism of the original elements with clean, contemporary furnishings and the most advanced of luxury technology. Upon entering The Town Hall Hotel & Apartments, guests are immediately drawn to gaze straight upwards into the light streaming through the beautiful domed roof of the elegant Art Deco entrance hall. The massive marble staircase and period ornamentation throughout the hall quickly begin to gain their merited attention.
Continuing out, guests have access to the eclectic conference and event halls. From the wood panelled Council Chamber that remains aesthetically and structurally as traditional as its name implies to the 220sqm contemporary DeMontfort Suite, The Town Hall can accommodate any variety of events. Each of the 98 guestrooms is individually furnished with digitally designed joinery panels, customs fittings and finishes, and bathrooms described by the architects as “diaphanous.” They are largely porous and open, allowing maximum natural light to spill in. The hotel’s gym and full-length tile swimming pool are embedded fluidly into the structure, as are the restaurant and cocktail bar. The addition of the serviced apartment option for guests was included to provide a bit of domesticity for those intending longer stays, or for heavy travellers tired of pampering and seeking a more residential atmosphere. Loh Lik Peng and Rare Architecture – inspired by the quality of the building’s spaces and the diversity of its styles, such as the additional Edwardian era entrance – have given birth to a hotel of five-star calibre.
