At the meeting place of London’s City and its East End, South Place is the first hotel from restaurateurs D&D London and their partner, Frogmore. It combines the business bustle of the nation’s financial center with the creative eccentricity of one of London’s hippest neighborhoods.
The South Place Hotel, located within this passage near Liverpool Street station, quietly absorbs the innate irregularities of the space with its consented U-shape and receptive, yet discerning façade that mirrors the buildings surrounding it. Conceived as two layers, the façade incorporates thermal insulation with glass against a dark, warm-colored metal, which play off one another in response to function and light.
"We have designed the façades to strengthen and elaborate the building's basic composition and to respond to its immediate context,” Vicky Thornton, Associate Director at Allies and Morrison, says.
“We hope the hotel will be not only a sustainable addition to the neighborhood as a result, but also improve the unity of the streetscape."
A carefully-crafted ground floor plan also allows 3 South Place restaurant and 3 South Place Bar to extend out onto the sidewalk for added interaction with the City’s street level.
Once inside the South Place Hotel, interior spaces – from its broad communal areas to the 80 bedrooms and suites – bear the aesthetic, award-winning signature of Conran + Partners, whose holistic practice embraces everything from master-planning and architecture to interior-, product- and graphic design.
Specially commissioned artwork – including a wall of mechanical pixels in the lift lobby – accent the building’s communal spaces, while an entire ground floor window is reserved for the winner of the annual South Place Hotel Art Prize, open to recent MA graduates of London art schools.
