Paying homage to Soho’s history as a centre of artistic activity and bohemia, London’s Sanctum Soho Hotel is a celebration of edgy glamour that fluidly integrates art and individuality into its design. The spacious lobby is decorated with paintings and "living artworks" – trees whose branches grow through breaks in the metal sheaths encasing them – with scattered Gothic elements providing a touch of antique class.
Light oaks, timbers and parquet flooring soften the ambience at Sanctum Soho, as do two elegant fireplaces. Striking furniture and handmade finishes by London design company Based Upon are interwoven throughout the boutique hotel's lobby and the members bar, endowing both spaces with a discreet seduction perfect for those seeking both decadence and rejuvenation.
Upstairs, a rooftop spa sports portholes and wavy railings that evoke a cruise-liner aesthetic, while an in-house cinema references classic odeons. Lesley Purcell's 30 individually designed bedrooms range from crash pads to vast suites and are based on four different mood schemes. Ranging from sexy and masculine deep chocolate browns, to streamlined glittery silver, sensual soft pinks, and deep exotic mauves for a more dramatic and provocative edge, no room at Sanctum Soho Hotel feels formulaic or looks the same. Personal touches are accentuated by the use of tasselled keys as opposed to the standard electronic variety.
