ARCHITECTURE / DESIGN

Woods Bagot

In the historic London Borough of Westminster, there’s nothing unusual about finding a hotel inside a grand townhouse. What is unusual is beyond the Georgian façade that fronts Eccleston Square Hotel the entire inner workings of the building have been carefully renovated and enhanced to the highest modern standards.

Olivia Byrne, who recently graduated from the prestigious Ecole Hotelière de Lausanne, worked her magic on the property. Where there were once staid furnishings and carpeted floors, there are now smooth monochrome tiles and decadent black crystal chandeliers. And where there was once just a regular restaurant, there’s now a 49-seater foodie haven created with Malmaison executive chef Keith Shearer. But these changes don’t mean that number 37 Eccleston Square has lost its identity. Traditional afternoon tea is served in the elegantly simplistic lounge, which features custom-made studded tub chairs, an open fire place and silk finished walls. The fine bone china crockery used throughout the hotel is 100% British.

Designed by expert planners Woods Bagot and equipped with revolutionary gadgets, underfloor water heating and sleep-inducing technologies, the bedrooms act as sensual inner-city cocoons where guests can relax and re-energize. Adjustable massage beds from Swedish firm Hästens act as the focus of each room, complemented by a programmable ‘wake up and sleep’ experience that controls the precise heating and lighting. The marble bathrooms feature smart glass walls that turn opaque at the touch of a button; while special in-room control pads let you take charge of everything from the curtains to the 46-inch 3D TV.

Olivia knows that in London, guests want tranquillity without being completely cut off from the outside world. With that in mind, she has made sure all of the rooms at Eccleston Square Hotel are connected to 3D TV Channels and super-fast complimentary wireless Internet. There are also in-room VoIP phones, giving you the chance to make affordable worldwide and free London calls from the comfort and privacy of your own space. The best use of technology is undoubtedly in the ground-breaking meeting rooms, where it’s possible to video conference and conduct presentations on an epic, 120-inch 3D media wall. Sitting here, it’s easy to imagine what the hotels of the future will look like.
