Interior Design: Kit Kemp
In 1985 husband and wife team Tim and Kit Kemp opened the Dorset Square Hotel which was their first boutique property. This led to the birth of Firmdale Hotels. The Kemp's stable of hotels now includes such well-known properties as The Soho Hotel in London and the Crosby Street Hotel in New York. In 2002, they parted with the Dorset Square Hotel but ten years later reacquired it. It was their belief in the reinvention of the area in recent years that was the deciding factor.
While Tim looks after the business side of Firmdale, it is Kit's unique, signature style that brings each hotel to life. She has been heavily influenced by the countryside where she spent her upbringing. Her design aesthetic is organic, using elements of the outdoors and mixing them with color and texture. She has overseen the interior direction of each and every property, her eye for eclectic detail ensuring no two rooms or spaces are alike.
Kit set out to make the interiors of the Dorset Square Hotel extra special. She has used exciting new fabrics from her exclusive collection with Christopher Farr as well as hand woven carpets from Argentina. Kit said "this is one part of the design process I love the most - collaborating with experts in their field, creating something totally new and unique."
In the past year the Dorset Square Hotel has undergone extensive refurbishment. The country house style of its former days has been updated with Kit's fresh contemporary English point of view. It is now infused with a fun mix of color, texture and stylistic elements. From the sumptuous drawing room and The Potting Shed bar & restaurant to all 38 bedrooms each has been individually designed and decorated in a unique way. The bathrooms have been constructed from marble and oak with freestanding showers.
