ARCHITECTURE / INTERIOR DESIGN
Kit Kemp
Individually decorated rooms and intimate drawing rooms make this Soho design hotel instantly feel like a home away from home. As with all hotels owned by interior designer Kit Kemp, the emphasis is on perfect detail and her collection of British art.
On entering Charlotte Street Hotel, a squat Botero sculpture and two abstract landscapes by Welsh painter Roger Cecil create a welcoming atmosphere. Wood-panelled drawing rooms flanked by French stone fireplaces are filled with deliciously overstuffed furniture – and yet more handpicked artworks such as those by Roger Fry and Vanessa Bell, who were both part of the famous early 20th century British Bloomsbury group of intellectuals.
Another striking Bloomsbury period painting, a piece of hand-made furniture, or even a dressmakers’ doll might be the eye-catching centrepiece of any given guestroom at Charlotte Street Hotel. Sumptuously patterned fabrics dominate the décor, such as those used to cover the tall, padded headboards. Kemp even came up with an exclusive wallpaper print using details taken from an 18th century Hogarth Press woodcut. Tall windows allow light to pour into the rooms and elegantly frame the views across the London rooftops outside.
Catering to the needs of the many business travellers buzzing around the media-hub of North Soho, the architects have created a state-of-the-art private screening room, fully equipped with the latest mod cons. A bustling mural adorns Charlotte Street Hotel’s ground floor bar and restaurant. Alexander Hollweg’s tableau depicts scenes of 21st century London and was especially commissioned by Kemp to revive the spirit of Roger Fry’s frescoes Scenes of Contemporary London Life from 1916 for the here and now.
