ARCHITECTURE / DESIGN
Autoban
Fluid and cohesive, the Witt Istanbul Hotel’s design is a synthesis of ancient, modern and contemporary forms. Local architecture and design firm Autoban, recognized by Wallpaper as “Best Young Designers of the Year” in 2004, designed the hotel’s exterior to reflect its neighborhood’s existing architectural style of sandstone façades and French balconies. The interior, on the other hand, is uniquely contemporary, with eclectic retro furnishings hand-picked from Autoban’s own collection, such as sleek rocking chairs and boxy leather couches.
The soothingly monochromatic color scheme of neutral tones, and black and white is immediately evident in the lobby’s natural furnishings and warm ambiance. The eighteen 60 sq meter rooms and the one 100 sq meter penthouse have each been outfitted as fully-equipped lofts, with a generous kitchenette and bar, separate lounge area, a king size bed and a decadent six-head rain shower. The bathrooms exude luxury with Molton Brown toiletries, Ross Lovegrove fixtures and shapely Corian sinks.
Wooden and steel-paneled wardrobes embellished with laser-cut, decorative patterns add a touch of contemporary ornament to the suites’ understated aesthetic. This motif, an undulating floral outline, is the Witt’s signature design and a recurring theme throughout the hotel. Modern accents like winged leather headboards, plywood Magnolia lights and polished black tiles are incorporated into each subdued interior, without disrupting the soothingly minimal color scheme.
Each room’s private balcony enjoys unobstructed views of Istanbul’s iconic skyline or the Bosphorus Strait. The glass-walled penthouse boasts a spectacular panorama and a wrap-around terrace. While guests are invited to relax in the lobby’s intimate bar, the hotel’s emphasis on autonomy and personal space ensures that each suite exemplifies domestic comfort.
