ARCHITECTURE / DESIGN

Architecture and Interior Design: Sinan Kafadar

An 17-story zinc and titanium façade peers out over the Bosphorus. Gently curved, as if to embrace the city, the building evokes a modern spin on the architectural styles of the 1940s and 50s. Windows provide a glimpse into the soul of Gezi Hotel Bosphorus. Each of the 56 rooms and eleven suites feature antireflection panoramic windows that offer sweeping views of either the Bosphorus, Taksim Gezi Park, or the hotel’s own lush garden.

The Gezi Hotel Bosphorus cultivates beauty inside and out. The high-quality wood and leather used in furnishings throughout provide a warm, cozy atmosphere that is amplified by a contemporary design ethos that fuses the rich color-blocking of Piet Mondrian with high tech flourishes. The design of each bedroom is inspired by an element of one of Mondrian’s paintings, yet sumptuous materials soften the strong, linear forms typically associated with the Dutch painter. The artist’s signature grid takes shape in numerous design elements in the rooms, from carpets to entertainment systems. The Mondrian motif is subtly mirrored on the exterior of the building through the long, gridded windows that jut out from the building’s façade.

The acclaimed architect Sinan Kafadar restructured the building according to his signature fusion of timeless design with up-to-date green technology. This principal of the Istanbul and Assisi-based studio Metex Design Group has elevated eco-friendliness into a subtle artform with his work on the Gezi Hotel Bosphorus. The hotel was refurbished according to ecologically friendly principles, particularly in regards to energy and water conservation resulting in a hotel that is practically zero-emission, earning it Turkey’s acclaimed “Greening Hotels” certification.
