MEET THE ORIGINAL: THOMAS SCHMID

Thomas Schmid, Managing Director of the Dolder Grand, has been a pivotal figure in the luxury hotel’s revitalization. Having managed several other prestigious hotels in both Switzerland and abroad, Schmid had a specific equilibrium in mind for the Dolder’s renovation that would celebrate the building’s history while radically transforming its overall aesthetic. “We definitely wanted to go back to the origins of the Dolder,” he says, “but we asked Norman Foster to bring us the highest quality architecture of the 21st century. The original castle flanked by the modern wings is a completely new combination.” With a penchant for design, Schmid has been part of almost every detail in this landmark renovation and redesign. He was responsible for everything from overseeing construction, to purchasing new furniture and hiring key executive staff, with the result of heralding a treasured historical landmark into the new millennium as an exquisite model of contemporary architecture.
