Most of the snow-covered slopes around Zermatt are wrapped by dense alpine forests. But here and there, the greenery surrounding the Matterhorn is punctured by the gently slanted roofs of wooden-built chalets. But one of these buildings, first erected here in the 1950s, has just been redesigned as an exclusive hotel, creating a benchmark for a new kind of alpine glamour.

According to Daniel Ferdinand Lauber, one of the young visionaries behind CERVO Mountain Boutique Resort, the architectural focus here is firmly on warmth and comfort. So instead of seeing tracts of synthetic materials, guests will be greeted by luxurious timber supports and solid stone partitions. The main building still has its original wooden floor, and even in the five newly built chalets, there’s a sense of subtlety and local integration. Daniel certainly knows a lot about this area; his family has owned this plot since the 1980s, and he’s since made a name for himself as the president of the hunting association in Upper Valais.

The link with hunting runs right through this mountain retreat’s central design concept. The curved, stylized antlers of a deer appear sporadically throughout the building (the word ‘Cervo’ is Italian for deer) and calming local materials like felt and loden give subtle nods to the region’s rich history of hunting. But CERVO Mountain Boutique Resort is no stuffy, old-school hunting lodge. There are clean lines swooping through the expansive interior spaces, giving visitors all the space they need to experience the charm and elegance of the Alps.

In the Provencal- inspired restaurant, where the tables are deliberately roomy and sociable, guests are encouraged to mix and mingle with each other. It’s been created this way so that here, beneath the long strips of gorgeous Swiss pine, people can regale each other with tales from the ski slopes. Just like the heady meals crafted each night by Seraina Lauber, the style is modern, but with its roots in age-old alpine traditions. One of these traditions is the après ski aperitif, which at CERVO Mountain Boutique Resort is taken on an airy terrace overlooking the saw-toothed mountains of the Alps.

CERVO Mountain Boutique Resort’s 33 rooms and suites hold onto the best bits of cozy alpine design, but they’re also bright and clutter-free. Within strolling distance of some of Europe’s best slopes and organized into separate chalets, they’ve been built to give guests total freedom. That means they can choose to socialize over breakfast on one of the outdoor terraces, or retreat to the solitude of one of the five private spas. With the Matterhorn providing the inspirational backdrop, there’s always time to relax and rejuvenate.
