Strolling from Bern’s glass-built railway station and out into the city’s historic center is a true feast for the senses. Trolleybuses rattle down the Unesco-listed streets, and the pavements bustle with espresso-sipping diplomats. And there, right ahead of anyone who visits, is Hotel Schweizerhof – a listed building, and one of the Swiss capital’s most recognizable landmarks. For 150 years, Bern’s first luxury hotel has been building a reputation for itself based on sumptuous luxury and Swiss sophistication. Now, after a major overhaul, it’s enjoying a 21st-century renaissance.

The elegant arched façade has been lovingly restored, and it looks as glamorous now as it did in 1913, when it was first installed. But behind the striking frontage, there have been bigger changes. General manager Michael Thomann has worked magic to weave the very latest technology in and out of the building’s plush historic features. Corridors have been scaled down to make the 99 rooms and suites more spacious and restful for guests, while some feature refreshed antique furnishings alongside modern trappings like flat-screen TVs and Nespresso coffee machines. The heart of Hotel Schweizerhof is the Lobby-Lounge-Bar, which is an institution favored by well-heeled locals and hotel guests alike. From Liz Taylor to Peter Ustinov or Albert Schweitzer, Jack’s Brasserie, the hotel’s wood-paneled restaurant serving classical Brasserie cuisine, has seen it all.

It is this long-standing history combined with first-class hospitality, modern design and present-day glamour, that make the Hotel Schweizerhof the most sophisticated address in the city.
