Claesson Koivisto Rune

Since its founding in 1995, Swedish architectural and design firm Claesson Koivisto Rune has been known for its brilliant constructions, clever product designs and always savvy solutions “The best designers in Sweden, they are deeply professional, passionate and create from the heart,” quips hotelier, Sandro Catenacci. Nobis Hotel, which opened in December of 2010, has become yet another star in the firm’s universe – if “star” is the right word. Nothing here is ostentatious or gratuitously clever. Everything in Catenacci’s most recently opened property is directed towards making the guest feel comfortable and surrounded by a sense of authenticity in two tradition-steeped 19th century buildings that were originally built and used as residential apartments. Located on Stockholm’s famed Norrmalmstorg Square, even their location is legendary. "Old classic hotels always have their own special ambiance. In these two historic buildings, we had the chance to create something with such an atmosphere from the outset,” says architect Eero Koivisto.

A cathedral-like lounge with soaring ceilings topped by two glass domes occupies a vast public space, which invites guests to linger and locals to stop in. All public spaces have floors of Carerra marble in a designed pattern. Colors throughout were conceptualized to provide, in the architects’ word “a soft backbone” to furniture and people, with lots of grays and brown. In the Gold Bar, guests can bask in the warm glow of the golden mirrors lining the walls and ceiling. Several restaurants include the new version of the Caina, whose muted color palette provides the perfect backdrop for updated Italian cuisine prepared by Catenacci’s brother Stefano, an acclaimed chef and caterer to the Swedish Royal family. In the guest rooms, soaring ceilings offer a sense of the building’s history, while all the materials, like native woods, zinc, and even rusted iron are meant to gain a patina that improves, not declines, with age. “We've worked with the ambition of creating interiors of the kind that you would encounter in a private home, assembled over a longer period of time. It sounds simple, but it's far from easy to achieve,” says architect Marten Claesson.

The Nobis Hotel’s overall effect is a mix of traditional and contemporary; it’s a destination venue that feels luxurious, while at the same time being low-key. Sandro Catenacci likens the hotel’s look and feel to the clothing he wears: custom-tailored, meaning high quality and made to measure, but without a brand name on one’s back. “We don’t look outside for inspiration. We go our own way. The difference is in the personality you can offer.”
