ARCHITECTURE / INTERIOR DESIGN

Millimeter R.O.O.M.

Hotel J’s nautical design concept draws on the historic America’s Cup J-Class boats and embodies the distinct seaside feel of New England.

On the water’s edge at Nacka Strand, Hotel J offers mile wide views of the Royal Djurgården, the world’s first National City Park, the island of Lidingö and the boats on the Saltsjön. The architects at Millimeter and designers at R.O.O.M. took the brick building, first constructed in 1912, and turned it into a stylish shrine to seafaring – and an American one at that. The colors of the American flag – red, white and blue – are an integral part of the hotel’s design concept that the owners chose to make visitors from across the Atlantic feel completely at home. White painted wooden boards, hard-wearing cotton cloth and solid oak furniture, built by R.O.O.M., create a feeling of nautical intimacy. Design Hotel J’s architectural center is its lobby, where fireside seats afford the same sweeping views of the islands just off the coast of Stockholm.

Casting an eye over the hotel’s 158 rooms reveals the same clean lines and classic simplicity evident in the lobby. This is, after all, not far from Stockholm, undoubtedly one of the Meccas of Scandinavian design. For the interiors, R.O.O.M. selected natural materials and fine linens to create the same authentic feeling of comfort and ease. Highest quality materials and good craftsmanship are the distinguishing mark of Hotel J – just like they are for any favorite boat.
