MEET THE ORIGINAL: JOHAN HELLSTRÖM
Johan Hellström first made his name as a commercial photographer, traveling all over the world in search of the perfect shot. However, as he neared age 40, he longed to settle down with his wife and their two daughters. The couple had already spent several summers at their second home on the island of Gotland. There, Hellström turned his attention to a previously neglected area: a limestone quarry on the nearly deserted Furillen peninsula. Where others saw a barren if beautiful no-man’s-land, Hellström saw an opportunity to create a truly unique travel experience. He and his wife bought the quarry, sold their belongings and moved their family to Gotland for good. “I think it can be good to get a new start in life,” Hellström says. With the Fabriken Furillen, he aims to give visitors that same breath of fresh air.
