In lovingly restoring parts of a century-old building in downtown Gothenburg, designers Christer Svensson and Lars Helling have created a masterpiece of refined tradition with the Elite Plaza Hotel.

Formerly the home of the Svea Fire & Life Insurance Company in the 1880s, and the University of Gothenburg, the Elite Plaza Hotel opened its doors in 2000 showcasing the elegant renovations undertaken by the two Scandinavian designers. An entrance composed of fine-cut and partially polished granite and the English mosaic floor have both been restored to their original splendour.

Neo-classical highlights are spread throughout the 143-room hotel that find their expression in fine details such as the arches of Italian marble stucco from which guests can look down on the open lobby to carefully crafted wrought-iron work that reflect the New Renaissance style well. Dark wood panelling covers the bar and the designers Helling and Svensson chose the material for the interior design of the hotel’s rooms as well, using it to great effect in singular columns, on doors and ceilings.
