Madrid-based architect Alvaro Planchuelo has extensive experience restoring historic buildings in Spain and West Africa, but this time a Swedish entrepreneur wanted a transformation and an intoxicating design mix of modern Marrakech meets Miami meets Southeast Asia. Within the old Muslim neighbourhood that once had a commercial port, this 18th century town mansion retains its signature arches and inviting courtyard but rejects past notions of decorative prestige. Instead, woods, stone and exotic accents are used to create a simple but still bohemian look. However, the interior by designers Erik and Katarina van Brabant is far from cluttered and space is emphasised by the prevailing colour of white and by using low-lying furnishings. Fine, unusual details inspire curiosity. White guinea goose feathers layer lampshades, cushions are made from hand-selected Rajasthani saris and pale sculptural spheres of feathers, that are actually ceremonial hats worn by Bandjon tribes in Cameroon, hang above the beds. The emphasis on natural materials worked by hand infuses the space with personality and an appreciation of quality and travel. Even pushing aside the room¹s massive hand-carved doors from Burma evokes the feeling of other-worldliness and the temple beyond is a spa-size bath set in a spacious bathroom. Soaking in a tub is transformed into a luxurious activity simply by lying in a huge, square, black bath as is your stay transformed simply by embracing the commodity of time and enjoying the simple cultural wealth around you. Stepping out, you may still enjoy the same vibe at the recently opened ‘PuroBeach’ a spa, pool and restaurant lounge set on a peninsula overlooking the bay of Palma. |
