Originally a mansion built in the 19th century, Hotel Único Madrid’s public spaces still retain the atmosphere of a charming aristocratic hideaway. Behind the white façade, large torches flank the doorway. Spectacular mosaic floors and a black marble table help to create a sense of drama, even as you enter the reception area, and lush linens, silks and velvet in neutral colors create welcoming hidden spaces for guests to discover and enjoy.
Throughout the hotel, the traditional and the modern mix effortlessly; alongside the centuries-old staircase, which reaches up through the atrium at the center of the hotel, hangs a floating, ribbon-like modern art installation by Madrid-based artist Jacinto Moros. During the day the hotel is thoughtfully lit with bedroom lamps designed by Jaime Hayón for Metalarte and hall lights by Miguel Mila. At night, tuberose-scented candles take center stage, evoking a feeling of peace and tranquility.
Right through the day and night, the garden acts as a meeting place and a sociable outdoor living space, with comfy Patricia Urquiola sofas enclosed by a jasmine, ivy and lavender trellis which follows the profile of Madrid’s skyline. The garden’s center piece, a spectacular outdoor fireplace designed by Ignacio Garcia-Vinuesa, turns chilly evenings into special memories.
In the 44 bedrooms, high ceilings and grandiose windows allow light to flood in while cozy, neutral rugs are artfully placed on the polished wooden floors. The playfully-textured wallpaper acts as a base for the neutral colors of the rooms’ overall décor, while lighting cleverly accents key forms. Doubling as private spas with a large Jaime Hayón baths and hydro-massage showers, the bathrooms come equipped with Rituals bath products and fluffy white robes. In Hotel Único Madrid, owner Pau Guardans has very much met his own brief, creating a space which is as restful and unpretentious as it is indulgent.
