The Hospes Design Team
Located in Madrid’s central Plaza de la Independencia, the Hospes Madrid offers superb views of the Alcalá Gate and the inspiring Retiro Park. The handsome red-brick building with wrought-iron balconies was designed by architect José María de Aguilar in 1883. Originally an apartment house for wealthy families, this fine example of the Bourbon Restoration period has been transformed into 41 uniquely decorated guestrooms, among them a grand suite, four grand suite duplexes and four junior suites. Because of the building’s landmark status as part of the Historic District, the Hospes Design Team carefully complied with structural requirements and ensured that the modernisation was in perfect harmony with the existing historic elements. The entrance is through an imposing court once used by arriving carriages – and its high ceiling, mouldings and magnificently restored wooden door make for an elegant welcome. Beyond the lobby is the luminous interior patio that leads to the Bodyna Spa in the former stables. The three levels of the Senzone restaurant include a formal dining room with an oak-coffered ceiling and stucco work, and a back patio where comfortable sofas and murmuring water beckon guests to linger over a drink. Throughout the hotel, the ambience of light and tranquillity is achieved through the use of white marble and hues of white, silver and gold offset by dark fine wood. Even the Baroque-style furniture has been leavened with white finishes. The six rooms on the fourth floor faithfully reflect the establishment’s personality. They are arranged on two levels, with a salon below and a staircase leading up to bedroom and bathroom. These rooms pay tribute to the old with their sloped ceilings of exposed wooden beams, and embrace the new with skylights.
