ARCHITECTURE / INTERIOR DESIGN
Architect: Oriol Tintoré
Interior Design: Sandra Tarruella e Isabel López
Grand Hotel Central is the creation of two architects working 85 years apart. Back in the 1920s, the original architect of the building, Adolf Florensa, imitated the designs of the first skyscrapers in Chicago. During its renovation Oriol Tintoré painstakingly preserved the original façade and set the bedrooms around an inner patio, which meant all rooms could face outwards and have plenty of natural light. Now, the airy feel of these spacious rooms is only enhanced by the glass and semi-opaque dividers employed by interior designers Sandra Tarruella and Isabel López to allow the bathrooms to become a continuation of the free-flowing design. Meanwhile, black-out blinds help to ensure restful, sleep-filled nights.
The hotel entrance and lobby – with wrought irons lamps, stone floors and bronze doors – remain as elegant as they were in the 1920s. The building’s original neoclassical stairway landings, tall ceilings and narrow windows perfectly complement the modern elements of the hotel, which are very firmly set in the 21st century.
The corridors of each floor are muted and peaceful, with black walls and indirect lighting, while the bedrooms use warm, calming colors to encourage relaxation. Each room’s two bedside tables are deliberately different – crushing convention and giving the rooms a more homely, welcoming feel. In the meeting rooms there is a deliberate contrast of shiny and matt, dark and clear, but simple lines, forms, textures and colors continue as a theme throughout the hotel. The Ávalon Restaurant and Café was overhauled in early 2011 to create a minimalist urban loft vibe with huge windows, timber flooring, industrial lamps and chocolate-brown furnishings.
Grand Hotel Central’s cutting-edge design and avant-garde technology come together perfectly on the rooftop, where chilled-out music invites guests to take a dip in the sparkling blue infinity pool.
