Built on an architecturally notable neo-classical site, Barcelona’s venerable Pujol i Brull clinic, Hotel Granados 83 brings high-end materials and design to its Old City location.
Hotel Granados 83 is constructed around a luminous central courtyard that itself spreads out from an elevator shaft in the middle, which leads to a glass ceiling. This extraordinarily vertical public space is the guiding organisational principle for the whole hotel. The original colonnades are enhanced by modern steel, red marble, glass and iron, but the lobby is dotted by strategically placed antiques and objets d’art. Images are constantly projected onto the walls, giving a sense of constant low-level movement. Flooring is black and white stone slabs that provide the visual texture of carpeting, and the motif of light and dark continues elsewhere: hallways are covered in pale marble and zebrawood.
Further use of marble, steel and glass continues in the guestrooms, enhanced by bare slabs of brick. Through the extensive use of white Thassos marble, bathrooms are an oasis of purity. All furnishings are covered in phosphorescent iron plating in order to create visual and tactile consistency. Including the desks, above which Asian pieces of art are on show that help to soften the ultra-modern choice of materials. Further warmth is lent by raw leather inserts on the bed’s headboard and chairs, creating a mix of materials that is both inspiring and soothing.
