ARCHITECTURE / DESIGN

Throughout the Vander Urbani Resort, there are memories and traces of a life well lived. On the steps outside Amanda and Aleksander Vujadinovič shared their first kiss, they raised their children in the house next door, and threw many parties in the space they now share with their guests. Over the years, as their family grew, they were continually renovating, knocking down walls, and buying adjoining properties, until they finally decided to open the space to the public and start a hotel.

Today, the intimate Vander Urbani Resort is spread through four buildings and invites guests to treat the modest and comfortable space as their own home. Curved walls, ceilings and doors create a continuous flow between the three storeys and homey comfort extends to the 16 rooms and suites, where high-end materials and amenities, such as luxurious fluffy towels and robes all add to the plush atmosphere.

Ideally located directly on the eastern river bank in the center of Ljubljana, the leafy pedestrian street right on the hotel’s doorstep is teeming with cafes, bars and galleries. Throughout the medieval streets, romantic bridges straddle the Ljubljanica river that flows through the town’s center, and elements of Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau eras can be seen in the city’s architecture. Architect and interior designer Sadar + Vuga had a vision to maintain these unique elements and the general outlook of the building has been protected with respect for the surrounding historic architecture. The hotel is open at the back, allowing northern light to enter the building from behind, while the cladding is constructed of reinforced concrete, new steel and glass.

The building includes a basement with a well-stocked wine cellar and a rooftop terrace, which boasts a sun-soaked glass box that acts as a rooftop living room. With views over the rooftops of the historical center, this is the ideal spot to unwind and reflect – whether you choose to do so with a cocktail in hand by the pool, or through a meditative yoga class. With the hosts on site to chat with guests and share their ample local knowledge, this hotel is ready to be taken as a home, no matter how long you choose to stay.
