The region is famous for its wine and its good climate. The city of Ponta do Sol has a small port and pleasant beaches, and there are a number of scenic trekking tours, called “levada walks”, in the region. The capital and cultural centre of Madeira, Funchal, is connected with Ponta do Sol by a road and is home to the Vicentes Photographic Museum, founded in 1948 and the oldest in Portugal, and a botanical garden specialised in aromatic and medicinal plants.
