HOT DEALS AND NEW HOTELS
NINI ANDRADE SILVA
Nini Andrade Silva, is a Portuguese-born architect, artist and award-winning designer. She is the creative mind behind the Design Hotels™ members Fontana Park and The Vine and now adds Hotel Teatro to her impressive repertoire.
Nini earned her dual degree in interior design and painting from Lisbon’s prestigious IADE, or Instituto de Artes Visuais, Design e Marketing. Today she is their international consultant. She has drawn upon her experience working with internationally celebrated designers specializing in different countries such as USA, Denmark, South Africa, France and England to perfect her own distinctive design aesthetic that has been playfully referred to as “ninimalist” since an interviewer coined the phrase a few years ago. She says, “[the interviewer] called me ‘ninimalist’ because my name is Nini, and instead of being a minimalist, I always like to give warmth to any design concept. I like to do things with a dash of fantasy.”
According to Nini, it’s “not what you see, but what you feel” that makes a space special. In all of her work, Nini inspires sensations through the tones that she creates. Perhaps her strong, intense affinity towards colour theory is derived from her background as a painter, which when taken into consideration, makes clear that experiencing one of her hotels is akin to deeply searching an abstract canvas.
Her bronze and gold Hotel Teatro is a masterwork in its own right, but the original virtuosity can be met when looking out of its windows at the beautiful and elegant city of Porto. Its spirit and history inspired Nini to transform the intuitions she derived from the city into an articulate expression of its grandiose, performative nature. “I like when you walk in and go ‘wow,’” she explains, with characteristic passion.
Visitors to Hotel Teatro, or any of Nini’s other masterworks, can’t help dropping their jaws to oblige her the honour.”
