ARCHITECTURE/ INTERIOR DESIGN

Architect: Mr. Francisco Aires Mateus
Interior designer: Ms. Nini Andrade Silva

As part of a project focused on refashioning old buildings in Portugal’s emerging metropolis, the Fontana Park Hotel has preserved the original theme of its structure, which was an iron factory in the early 1900s. The iron motif is visible from floor to ceiling in this 139-room hotel located on a hill above Lisbon’s old city, most noticeably in the eye-catching reception area. Prominent Portuguese architect Francisco Aires Mateus has lent a strong modern flourish to the project, and award-winning designer Nini Andrade Silva has injected her signature blend of minimalism (“ninimalist”) and soulful personality into the space. Guestroom furnishings incorporate a palette of black and white with occasional flirtations with green, and all is simple and unfussy to emphasise the beauty and appeal of both the surrounding architecture and the cosmopolitan Portuguese capital. Even the bathrooms are haute design – guests can relax in an illuminated bathtub after dining at the hotel’s upscale seafood restaurant Saldanha Mar, which is all in white, or at the hotel’s chic Asian fusion boîte spot Bonsai, which contains a 100-year-old namesake tree as well as imperial purple rugs and luminous inset lighting. The bar embraces an approach different from the restaurants and guestrooms, using bold colour blocking to elicit a visual intensity: black bar stools stand in front of a black lacquer counter and an interactive screen wall. Old has never felt so new.
