HOT DEALS AND NEW HOTELS
One and a half hours east and just north of Rome, between the 2,912-metre peak of the Corno Grande and the sandy beaches of the Adriatic, nestling in the middle of the Appennines, is Santo Stefano di Sessanio, one of the most striking of the region’s all but abandoned hilltop towns and the home of Sextantio. Named after some of the area’s first settlers, Sextantio is a gorgeous series of buildings throughout the handsome village, bought and then meticulously revived by Swedish-Italian entrepreneur, philanthropist and hotelier Daniele Kihlgren.
Kihlgren is entirely committed to conservative restoration using strictly local materials – primarily terracotta tiles, wood and limestone – as well as historical accuracy. Sextantio is not part of the hip Italian hotel route of idealised glamour and luxury. It is a place for people with a strong sense of adventure, a passion for history and authenticity and a thirst for new experiences. But it is equally obliging for those of their loved ones who value a beautiful local meal and comfortable, elegant accommodation. Sextantio is not a traditional hotel, but tradition is deeply ingrained in its foundations.
